Overview

"Theologians who have waited anxiously for Roberto S. Goizueta's latest volume will not be disappointed. Exploring a Christology that weaves together the insights of liberation theology and theological aesthetics, Christ Our Companion offers a challenge to Christians to live out the experience of Jesus as their Way, Truth, and Light. Focusing on the lived religious practices of everyday Latino/as, Goizueta's constructive Christology emphasizes the need for incarnational theology that is nourished by the Catholic sacramental unity of symbols and that which they symbolize. Goizueta's text demonstrates that an emphasis on the aesthetic does not diminish but instead informs liberation theologies. His ressourcement from the margins of Catholic tradition through Latino/a popular Catholicism is a vital contribution to contemporary contextual theologies."" - Michelle Gonzalez Maldonado, Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, The University of Scranton

Roberto Goizueta unites this book around the disjuncture between the Christian claim that Christs life, death, and resurrection are the key to universal human meaning, on the one hand, and our increased consciousness of the diverse, pluralistic world in which we live, on the other hand. This dissonance, he notes, raises important questions about the ethical and theological defensibility of any religious position, particularly when the rationales for so much of the violence we see around us are grounded in religious principles. In such a world, how can a Christian proclaim that message credibly and responsibly?

Goizueta argues that ""the answer to this question will only be discovered as we, through our everyday actions, respond to Christs claim to be the Way, the Truth, and the Life by embodying that claim in our actions. Ultimately, the credibility of Christs claims rests on the evidence presented by those persons who have lived out those claims.""

Roberto S. Goizueta, a past president of the Catholic Theological Society of America, is a professor of theology at Boston College. He is the author of Caminemos con Jesús.
