AN OUTSTANDING BOOK OF 2014 - INT'L BULLETIN OF MISSIONARY RESEARCH (IBMR)
In recent decades, traditional notions of evangelism as missio ad gentes --, mission from a Christian center out "to the peoples--." have been nuanced by a new understanding of evangelizing as missio inter gentes, mission "among the peoples." Beginning from this new understanding of mission, Jonathan Tan rethinks the task of evangelization in Asia, home to two thirds of the world's population. Tan explores the challenge of doing Christian mission in the context of profound socio-cultural diversity and religious pluralism, complicated by the interplay of postcolonialism, globalization, migration, religious exclusivism and other forces. Ultimately, Tan concludes, the mission efforts of Asian Christians themselves will be the crucial factor in determining the furture and even the survival, of Christianity in Asia.
"Dr. Tan provides a comprehensive and astute account of issues facing Christian mission in Asia: religious pluralism, intercultural concerns, migration, and mission among the youths. This book will serve as a reference text for years to come." --Kwok Pui-Ian, Episcopal Divinity School, Cambridge, Massachusetts
"It is common knowledge that the most creative--and perhaps controversial--theology of Christian mission is found in Asia, and Tan's clearly written and engaging book confirms this view. It persuasively argues that orthodoxy, orthopraxis, and orthopathos are integral parts of Christian mission in the religious pluralism and among the social-media savvy youth of Asia. May Tan's work receive wide attention among Western Christians." --Dr. Peter C. Phan, The Ignacio Ellacuria, S.J. Chair of Catholic Social Thought, Department of Theology, Georgetown University, Washington, DC
Jonathan Y. Tan is senior lecturer and discipline chair in studies of religion at Australian Catholic University in Sydney. He previously taught at Xavier University in Cincinnati, OH and The Catholic University of America Washington, DC.
